The Earth’s Source of Antioxidants

Anywhere you go nowadays, whether it be your local pharmacy, grocery store or corner gas station, you’ll see products boasting their antioxidant ingredients. We’ve been taught since early childhood that antioxidants are some wonder-substance, capable of fighting off ill health. The logical next question, however, becomes “why?” and “how?” Perhaps not so surprisingly, when you ask someone these questions, they simply offer a shrug.
It’s worth taking a look into, in order to better understand the properties that antioxidants have, where they come from and how they help. After all, if Americans are going to dish out billions of dollars each year on what they believe is going to help them live healthier lives, we should understand what the rave is all about.

Antioxidants, at the core of their function, are chemicals that help our bodies prevent or hinder cell death. So, what causes cell death? Well, unfortunately, there’s a lot out there that’s not so good for our health and wellbeing. One of the primary factors toward cell death is free radicals.

Free radicals are the byproduct of environmental toxins (i.e. electromagnetic frequencies, radiation, smoke, etc.); they are molecules produced as a result of our bodies breaking down food for energy. Moreover, free radicals are a result of our bodies’ exposure to oxidation (exposure to oxygen) that can break atoms and, in turn, leave them with unpaired electrons. What happens as a result is that these unstable atoms then becomes dangerously disruptive, attacking healthy cells to take away their electrons. It’s an endless process which, if not treated correctly, can lead to severe cell death.

When asked about the process of oxidative damage, Dr. Roy Lidke, highly-regarded physicist and podiatrist, explained that, “If this release of reactive oxygen species gets carried away, we call this oxidative stress.  Oxidative stress is related to cell damage in the inflammatory process, heart disease, cancer, and the aging process and can eventually lead to cell death.”

That’s where antioxidants come knocking.
Antioxidants are certain substances that may help in protecting healthy cells from the damage caused by free radicals. In essence, what antioxidants do is give an electron to those unstable atoms in need.

So, what’s the solution?

What can people do to avoid free radical damage and maintain a balanced internal system?
The human body performs most optimally when it is balanced with an adequate supply of electrons available to it. Electrons, in and of themselves, provide the negative potential that the human body needs to sustain a stable, internal bioelectrical “environment.”
Some may call these electrons a natural source of “antioxidants.”


Consumers have become accustomed to finding their source of antioxidants and electrons in the variety of foods and man-made supplements. Those work, but they’re not the only solution. An often overlooked solution to antioxidants is the greatest source of healing available to us – the earth’s surface.


The earth’s surface possesses a nearly limitless supply of free electrons. This supply is consistently maintained (replenished) due to it being electrically conductive with its atmospheric electrical circuit (i.e. being struck by lightning at the equator thousands of times each minute).
The medical community has come to recognize this phenomenon and studies have recently been conducted to better measure and understand the benefits of being in contact with the earth’s surface or walking barefoot – also known as “earthing.”

Dr. Alan Christianson, an Integrative Health Specialist in the Scottsdale, AZ area is one of the many doctors who understand and appreciate the concept of Earthing. With respect to his own practice, Dr. Christianson went on to say that, “I know that many of my patients suffering from various ailments also spend a lot of time indoors and with inactive lifestyles. Something as simple as adding grounding to your daily routine can work wonders upon the rest of your day and the rest of your life.”

These studies have suggested that, by allowing for an influx of electrons into the body, the Earth’s potential assists in stabilizing the electrical “environment” for organs, tissues, and cells.


Think of the earth’s natural surface as a “power source” in that respect. When in direct contact with it, our bodies are able to maintain healthy, homeostatic level of electrons and compensate for any lost as a result of free radical stress.
While the theories associated with barefoot benefits are age-old, they have only been put into practice and recognized in recent years.
When you’re considering your need for antioxidants next, put down your wallet and don’t go to the grocery store right away. Slip your shoes off and step outside. You may just feel a heck of a lot better afterward.

Juicing, Earthing, Antioxidants…Oh My!

green-juiceIt wasn’t until recently that I had fully understood or begun to appreciate this newborn trend of juicing. I had slept through my alarm and was hastily throwing on my socks when I was startled by the clashing and spinning noise downstairs. As I made my way downstairs, I saw my mother standing in the kitchen with a brand spanking new machine in front of her. It was chrome, metallic color and looked pretty cool…whatever it was. As my mom stuck carrots and celery in the top, a cup below was slowly being filled with some sort of juice that appeared supplement-like. Something you’d see a bodybuilder adding protein to after a bout at the gym.


“David, take this with you on your way to work. It’s organic and full of antioxidants. You’ll feel great,” explained my mom.


“Whatever you say,” I replied as I rushed out the door, plastic cup in hand.


You know, it’s funny (but not surprising) how the words “organic” and “antioxidant” so quickly widen the eyes of listeners and readers. It’s a buzzword that spikes someone’s curiosity and takes them from skeptic to willing participant.


Despite my reluctance, the antioxidant-filled juice that my mom made me that morning was remarkable. It’s not always easy to get in 6-8 servings of fruits and vegetables into your daily diet, so a solution such as juicing is almost a no-brainer. Cooking and heating processed foods alters the chemical composition of foods in their natural state and, as a result, destroys their micronutrients. Eating naturally this way is a great source of organic and antioxidant-filled foods. I’ve added juicing to my daily diet, but what else can we do naturally to live an energetic life in optimal health?


While there are plenty of items you can spend money on to treat your body, it seems foolish to do so if you can get the same results at no cost.


There’s a growing concept in the medical community known as earthing or grounding. It’s relatively simple and based on nothing more than walking barefoot on the earth’s surface. That calm, peaceful feeling that you experience when walking barefoot has some science behind it.


Studies have shown that maintaining a direct connection between our bodies and the earth’s surface is beneficial to our health. Stresses and toxins in our daily lives create a harmful build-up of free radicals in our bodies. Too much of this can wreak havoc on our bodies’ healthy cells and create oxidative stress. Fortunately, we have the Earth, a giant magnet with an endless supply of electrons available to us.


Think of these electrons similarly to the micronutrients in juicing. They’re the natural antioxidants that our bodies need to neutralize harmful free radicals and stabilize our bodies’ frequencies. It’s this connection with the earth that allows us to balance our body and promote optimal health.
