Is an Earthing Mat a Key to Better Health?
Lately I have become interested in the concept known as earthing (also known as grounding) and the positive effects it can have on one’s health. I have even gone so far as purchasing a universal earthing mat that I use indoors under my computer desk each day.
It has only been a couple days but I am excited to see if I notice any long-term effects from using this grounding mat.
In this post I am going to discuss what earthing actually is, some potential benefits to earthing, and earthing products that will help you take advantage of this incredible discovery.
What is Earthing?
Earthing is simply the act of coupling one’s body with the Earth’s eternal and gentle surface energy. This can be achieve freely and naturally by walking outside barefoot or connecting your body to the ground by lying directly on the Earth’s surface. There is really nothing fancy or complicated about the concept.
The process itself allows your body to become suffused with negatively-charged free electrons that are present on the Earth’s surface. This allows your body to become equalized to the electric energy level of the Earth.
The main barrier that we as modern humans face is that we are always wearing some sort of shoe or footwear that prevents us from coming in direct contact with the Earth and thus utilizing the natural healing energy that the Earth can give us.
We also suffer from the fact that we spend so much of our time indoors where we are unable to receive these magical healing energies from our planet Earth.
This is where earthing mats or grounding pads come into play as they provide a way to connect your body to the Earth while you remain indoors.
In just the past decade or so, the practice of grounding has begun to be incorporated in the daily routines of athletes such as football players, swimmers, and cyclists whose incredible results have been studied and documented.
Overall, earthing is a very safe and natural process. Indoor grounding mat earthing as done with an earthing pad poses very little risk and doesn’t involve any sort of electrocution although some users will notice a slight tingling or warming sensation on the bottoms of the feet during a grounding session.
What is an Earthing Mat?
An earthing mat (also known as a grounding mat or grounding pad) is a device that can be used indoors to get that direct connection to the Earth that you otherwise could not get unless you were outside walking around or lying in direct connection with the Earth’s surface.
There are many types available from earthing universal mats that can be used under a desk while working, mouse pad mats, mats that you can sleep on, and even earthing blankets and throws.
Many of the mats come with a conductive earthing mat cover that is slipped over the pad. One side of the cover is usually conductive and this is the side in which you would want to come in contact with the device.
Grounding mat installation is very simple. Each earthing product is used by plugging a cord into the ground plug of a standard outlet. Then all you have to do is bring the grounding device into contact with your body by either resting your feet on it, lying on it, or using it in whichever way the device was designed to be used.
Most earthing products come with an outlet tester device. This is just a simple device that plugs into your wall outlet and checks to make sure that your outlet is grounded. Determining a proper grounded outlet is usually as easy as looking at a couple of lights on the device.
Once the outlet is checked and the cord is plugged into the device, it is pretty much ready for use.
In the video below you can see all the main components that come with a basic universal earthing mat.
How do Earthing Mats Work?
As discussed above earthing mats are very easy to use and involve a simple process to get started. First, is the testing of the outlet with the circuit tester, then simply connect the cord to the grounding device and plug the other end into the wall outlet and the device is ready to use.
Once plugged in and in contact with the body, a grounding mat or device works by transferring negatively charged free electrons to the body from the Earth. So it equalizes your body to the same electrical energy level as our planet.
Do Earthing Mats Really Work?
According to one of the best and most popular earthing books available:
Earthing: The Most Important Health Discovery Ever?
…The process of grounding works and there are many case studies documented in the book.
The authors state that some people will see results very quickly while others may take time. Overall, the most important thing is that you use grounding over the long-term in your daily routine to get maximum benefits. They also state that once the practice ceases, symptoms that earthing alleviated will slowly return.
Another great proponent of earthing is David Wolfe of Longevity Warehouse. In this compelling video below you can see that an earthing mat can have a signifcant impact when used around electronics.
What Does Earthing Do?
Again I will cite a great book on Earthing by Clinten Ober, Stephen T. Sinatra M.D., and Martin Zucker which details and documents case studies from people who have benefitted from utilizing earthing in their daily regimens.
Accoring to the authors, those who regularly incorporate earthing into their daily routines for an extended period of time may notice the following results:
- Relieves and eliminates symptoms from inflammation
- Reduces or eliminates chronic pain
- Improves sleep
- Increases energy
- Lowers stress and promotes calmness
- Normalizes the body’s biological rhythms
- Improves blood pressure and flow by thinning the blood
- Relieves headaches and muscle tension
- Lessens menstrual symptoms
- Speeds healing
- Helps with jet lag
- Protects the body against electromagnetic fields (EMFs)
- Accerlerates recovery from intense exercise and athletic activity
More Evidence For Earthing
So it seems the evidence for earthing is pretty strong. In this post, I attempted to describe what the process is and how it works in addition to providing some solid documentation on some of the great benefits that can be achieved by putting grounding into your daily schedule.
In future posts, I will document my own experience with earthing to see if I can personally discover and witness some of these dramatic health benefits.
